MIL-A-23836, MILITARY SPECIFICATION, ANTENNA SYSTEMS, SUBMARINE, DESIGN, LOCATION, AND INSTALLATION, GENERAL SPECIFICATION (3 SEP 1963)., This specification covers the general mechanical and electrical requirementsfor design, and for location and installation on Submarines of antennas for electronic equipment, and is primarily for the use of antenna system manufacturers. Electronic equipment covered by this specification is primarilyexternal to the pressure hull. In addition to the radiating elements (bothactive and passive), antenna systems within the scope of this specificationconsist of the radio-frequency transmission line from the connector at theinboard detecting or transmitting equipment to the outboard receiving orradiating element and all components which which serve to tune erect, protect orinterconnect the antenna. The hydraulic system from the erecting mechanismback to the first distribution manifold is part of the system. Electricalcontrol cables from the actuating equipment out to and including the outboardantenna components are part of the system. Functional parts of the submarinesuch as the snorkel tube and periscope which also serve as antenna masts shallconform to the requirements of their primary, purpose, suitably modified forsubject multi-purpose use. The term system as employed within this specificationrefers to military operational function as a subsystem of a submarine rather thanto electrical, electronic, mechanical and hydraulic equipment divisions.Antenna systems are essential for the safety and continued combat capability ofthe ship.
